Conventionally, these two capabilities were said to contradict with each other leading to difficulties achieving a good balance between them.
MIZUNO tackled this challenge and developed the "MIZUNO WAVE" technology based on the idea of inserting a wave in the sole. We eventually achieved the ideal balance.
A runner is subject to impact of two to three times his/her body weight.
A runner's legs and body are subject to impact of two to three times his/her body weight every stride. This impact passes from legs to ankles, knees, and lower back, which can gradually cause knee or back injuries, with the runner often unaware of this development.
Over-pronation negatively affects runner's performance.
A human's legs have a function called "pronation" to roll ankles inwards to mitigate impact when landing.
However, if your legs roll exessively due to physical traits or fatigue, the "over-pronation" can cause knee or back injury.
Conventionally, it was thought that enhancing the cushioning capacity to mitigate impact would increase the possibility of over-pronation occuring.
Therefore, MIZUNO WAVE focused our attention on the wavy form structure with the characteristics that the shoes maintain flexibility to the directions where the cusioning capability is required, while the shoes maintain firmness to the directions where stability is required.
Inserting wavy plates in the shoe soles enables the cushioning capability and stability to be maintained simultaneously.

In the MIZUNO WAVE technology, the wavy plates, which are inserted in the shoe soles, serve as suspension to the direction of impact and reduce the shock when landing.
